Why do I have shoe odor?
Our feet have over 250,000 sweat glands which produce approximately one cup of moisture per day! The moisture, combined with the fact that our shoes and socks typically have very little ventilation, creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungus to develop. It is bacteria that are the most prevalent cause of shoe odor.
At any given time, millions of bacteria live on our feet, along with fungi, molds, ammonia, and denatured proteins. Like all living things, these organisms have survival activities which consist of food intake and the production of waste. Bacteria will consume dead skin cells and naturally, produce waste. It is the waste material that is often the cause of shoe odor. As physical activity increases, bacterial growth, waste and odor intensity.
What can you do to prevent shoe odor?
- Wash smelly feet thoroughly and dry completely after washing.
- Apply antiperspirant or foot powder to reduce sweat.
- Choose shoe materials that breathe and socks that wick moisture away from your feet.
- Avoid wearing rubber or plastic shoes and nylon socks which can cause perspiration and bacterial activity.
- Avoid wearing the same pair of shoes two days in a row.
- Change socks daily.
